Dear Parents/Carers

RE: Issuing food to children to bring to school

I would like to remind you that due to Health and Safety guidelines, especially in relation to food allergies and intolerances it is school policy not to hand out any food brought in by children to celebrate their birthday or other special occasions.

Donations of food can only be shared at extra special school events where parents and carers are present and able to make their own individual decisions, about whether they wish for their child to partake in what is on offer, for example at our Eid celebration.

I have been in the dining hall at lunchtime and am concerned about some of the contents of children’s packed lunches.

Some children’s lunches contain food cooked at home which would be better served hot, such as potato wedges, fish fingers or chips .  We now officially have healthy school status and as part of this we must ensure that every child is eating a healthy lunch.

An ideal healthy packed lunch may consist of a sandwich, wrap or salad, yoghurt, piece of fruit and some water. Children are not allowed chocolate bars/biscuits, sweets or fizzy drinks. Due to an increase in the amount of children with severe and life threatening allergies to nuts I must ask that peanut butter or other nut related food items, for example Nutella (chocolate and hazelnut spread), not to be used in packed lunches.

We have posted sample menus for packed lunches, provided by the Schools Food Trust on this web page.

yours sincerely,

Ms. Prue Barnes
