Notes from a meeting recently held at Newport School

Year 6 Parent /Carer Meeting
3 January 2012

Present: Prue Barnes, Sharon Vassell, Anri Ruthven, Amirun Nessa, Ashley Walker, Lisa McIntyre, the parents/carers of 47 year 6 pupils

Prue Barnes welcomed the group to the meeting and outlined the national  changes to the assessment procedures for Year 6 pupils this year.

• Reading and maths continue to be assessed through a test procedure with papers marked externally
• Writing is now assessed internally by teachers. Evidence for levels is gained through a profile of pupils’ writing which includes a number of samples.

PB explained to the group that Newport’s results have been improving rapidly over the past 2 years and that our progress from KS1 is outstanding. Newport is in the top 5% of schools nationally for progress.

Home Learning

It is essential that all children engage in some home learning, especially reading every day and learning the times tables to 12. The importance of talking about the story and understanding the vocabulary was highlighted. Bi lingual dictionaries or Google Translate may be helpful for some families if English is not spoken at home.

We recommend all children read for between 20 and 30 minutes each day. Word lists and times tables are listed in the back of Reading Record books, these need to be practised daily. All pupils have revision books which are full of valuable information. Please use these regularly to support school learning.

Attendance and Punctuality

It is vital that all pupils attend school every day, unless they are very ill. The curriculum is very full and the class moves through it at pace. When pupils miss aspects of learning it can impact on their future learning within the topic and can result in them losing confidence.  We begin the day promptly at 8.50am and move straight into learning. Pupils who are even a little late will miss valuable learning opportunities.

Sleep, Diet and Wellbeing

Although pupils in Year 6 are beginning to develop independence and often want to stay up later, they still need a good amount of sleep in order to learn well the next day. We recommend that all children are in bed by 8.30pm at the latest. Avoid the use of TVs and computers in bedrooms as children will often use these when they should be resting.

It is very important to have breakfast each morning to set them up for a day of learning and to drink water throughout the day. Parents/carers are welcome to send in named water bottles and a healthy break time snack to boost energy throughout the morning.

Exercise and other activities are really important to promote health and wellbeing. Try to include opportunities for physical activity and social events/clubs. Year 6 can be stressful for some pupils so it is important to ensure there is balance.

Interventions and Learning Support

Pupils in Year 6 are offered additional support to help them to learn to the best of their ability and to prepare them for the demands of secondary school. At Newport we invest a significant amount of money in providing support for pupils in Year 6.
Some of the support groups offered are:

Mr Briggs – Reading and Writing
Miss May –Maths groups
Ms Barnes- Reading groups
Saturday school – letters will be issued this week for the 60 available places

Social Networking/E Safety

Ms Barnes advised parents/carers about the potential dangers of social networking sites such as Facebook and MSN. There have been difficulties in the past involving pupils ‘hacking’ into other people’s accounts and using them to treat others unkindly. A parent contributed an example of this happening on a site which appears to be a very child friendly game style activity. We strongly urge all parents/carers to monitor closely their child’s activity on the internet and be very aware of the content of the internet sites they are using.

We continue to want to work closely in partnership with parents/carers so that we can help each child be the best learner they can be. We encourage all parents/carers to contact the class teacher if they have any concerns and make an appointment to speak to a senior leader if necessary.

We wish all our Year 6 pupils a happy and successful year.
