Curriculum
Foundation Stage
The Foundation Curriculum followed in the nursery and Reception classes covers many areas of learning which link to the National Curriculum and provide a rich foundation for learning.
Personal, Social and Emotional development, Communication, Language and Literacy, Mathematical development, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Physical development and Creative development are all included in the curriculum planned for Nursery and Reception class pupils. We recognise the role parents have played and continue to play in the education of their child. We aim to build on and extend these foundations offering children a relevant, broad and balanced curriculum that takes into account pupil’s individual needs and capabilities.
Children are encouraged to gain independence in their learning through first hand experiences. Play is central to children’s learning and it is through play that young children consolidate and put their learning into practice; communicating with adults and each other, co-operating and negotiating.
Key Stage 1 & 2
Throughout your child’s time in school, our approach to the curriculum seeks to develop respect for others, confidence and independence and to encourage children to recognise the contribution they can make to the life of the school.
We are committed to providing a full balanced curriculum covering all the National Curriculum requirements, including English, Maths, Science, ICT, Art, History, Geography, Music, PE and DT. The school curriculum also includes Religious Education, Personal and social Education and Citizenship. Children are taught in their own mixed ability class for all subjects. Regular Monitoring of progress takes place and individual learning targets in Maths and English are set termly and shared with parents/carers at Open Evenings. Each pupil from Reception to year 6 receives an annual written report on their progress.
In key stage 1 and 2, we teach numeracy and literacy daily to all pupils using the framework of the national literacy and numeracy strategies. PE, RE and music are taught in regular weekly timetabled sessions. Other subjects are taught in linked blocks throughout the school year. The use of ICT underpins learning throughout the curriculum and pupil’s skills are developed continuously as part of our planned provision.
Every class has a timetabled weekly session in one of our two ICT suites in which skills can be developed and links made to all areas of learning. Every class makes a termly visit to our nearby environmental site to study the outdoor environment and some year groups use the site for extended studies.
